I was at a bookstore last weekend glancing through a couple of books and sipping some coffee and noticed one of the books has a 2008 copyright. Now I thought the purpose of a copyright was to protect your original works by stamping them with when they were created. Am I wrong?

How can a book that was published in 2007 have a 2008 copyright? Why would you do that? I am perplexed.
